But for William Marshal, Cartmel would not be here. Knight extraordinaire, servant of kings and, from 1216, Regent of England, Marshal was described by the then Archbishop of Canterbury as a ‘good man’ - good enough, indeed, to found Cartmel Priory in around 1189, the seed from which the village of the same name grew. His sons commissioned a rollicking biography detailing his childhood during the Anarchy (the civil war between King Stephen and the Empress Matilda), his career on the tournament circuit and his role advising King John at Runnymede.

Trinity College Dublin's John Marshall and Lancaster University's Sophie-Thérèse Ambler, medievalists par excellence, is joined by David Horspool, Richard III’s biographer, for a tilt at ‘the greatest knight in the world.’
